Immunity health is of utmost priority these days with the emergence of COVID19, and as some people may choose to vaccinate to keep themselves at peace with catching the virus, I have an all-natural remedy that is available to you NOW that your body will respond to favorably immediately!
A few ingredients that are readily available and are major powerhouses when it comes to the immune system are apple cider vinegar and garlic.
Even better, mix these two champions of immunity together and BAM! you will have an immune system that's fully supported when even the toughest viruses try to come invade!
You can rest assured I've done my homework, as I'm an herbalist who has researched food as medicine for quite some time now. Between working with food my entire professional career, continuing my education in my early 30's as a practicing herbalist, and reading up on every new "it" plant or herb to become popular, I have a solid understanding & certain level of expertise when it comes to the body's systems and food as medicine.
So let's dive in with some knowledge, followed by a powerful potion you can whip up and keep on hand during the months of cold and virus season.
To start off, let me tell you about garlic:
-containing high levels of sulfur, it helps the body absorb the trace mineral zinc, which is an immunity booster.
-it can boost the number of virus-fighting T-cells in your bloodstream
-contains essential minerals for immunity health, such as potassium and calcium
-the chemical component of garlic, allicin, makes this a powerful antibacterial and antiviral remedy
Now, let's take a look at apple cider vinegar:
-the high concentration of fiber, vitamin C, and acids from the ferment, also known as the "mother" , help to boost immunity while breaking up the congestion that comes with a cold.
-ACV helps to alkalize the body, and when we have balanced pH levels in the body, it is unfavorable conditions for bacteria and viruses to grow, killing them off.
-the acid in the ACV helps to thin out any mucous, helping to remove it from the respiratory system along with any toxins that were trapped by the mucous build-up.
-the nutrients found in apples support lung health, which is sometimes compromised during the cold and flu.
As you can see , these two common kitchen and pantry items have major potential to support and help you when it comes to immunity health...but now you might be thinking "but garlic and ACV, together? Ew!"
Well, there's one very magical ingredient that ties this all together for a surprisingly tasty medicine you can keep in your apothecary/medicine cabinet for when this time of year comes around, and that ingredient is honey. Mmmmmm, yummy honey! Now honey is one of three sources I use to sweeten anything, and guess what- honey has healing properties, too! It's anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial, as well as a soothing remedy for people suffering with acid reflux. So now you might be wondering...how do all three of these ingredients tie in together? Great question...so let's move to the recipe!
COLD AND FLU ELIXIR:
Serving: 2 tsp., 2-3 times a day
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 5 minutes
6 whole garlic cloves
1/2 cup honey
1/8 cup ACV
Add garlic cloves to a saute pan with a thin layer of avocado oil, and saute over medium heat for 2-4 minutes, until the aroma from the garlic is noticeable.
You are not cooking the garlic, but rather, activating the healing chemicals of the garlic plant.
Remove from heat, and add in 1/2 the amount of honey with 1/2 the amount of ACV.
Mix together well, allowing the garlic's healing properties to begin permeating into the honey.
Add in the other half of honey and ACV, blending it all together.
Pour into a tight-sealed container, preferrably a glass jar, and take 2 tsp. 2-3 day.
PLEASE NOTE: the more garlic, the better! If you feel like your elixir has enough room for more garlic bulbs, saute up a few more and pack that liquid with garlic's goodness!
Friends, do not be weirded or grossed out by this combo of ingredients. I know it sounds pretty awful, to put these things together, but trust that it is actually a sweet lil' unique tasting treat that you might actually not only like, but also come to enjoy!
