Let’s dissect this for one moment: ther·a·py: noun: treatment intended to relieve or heal a disorder.
dis·or·der: noun in MEDICINE: a disruption of normal physical or mental functions; a disease or abnormal condition. beer: noun: an alcoholic drink made from yeast-fermented malt flavored with hops.
Now that we’ve defined these terms in this cutie lil’ quote, encouraging people to drink their problems away, let’s get this straight: Use an alcoholic drink as treatment to relieve or heal a disruption of normal physical or mental function. Read that again.
That’s the message that is being sent out to society, in mass production through tank tops, water bottles, hoodies, travel mugs, stickers, koozies, and all sorts of other outlets. We’re able to justify our drinking because “it’s my therapy” and society makes it a common place for dealing (or rather, NOT dealing and actually avoiding dealing with) the difficult shit.
I challenge you all to take a look at your relationship to booze. Is alcohol a therapy in coping with the hard days, the long work weeks, the difficult situations, or the overwhelming emotions?
If so, you are not alone.
