Summertime Mocktail Recipes

Hot summer sun always equaled sangria and margarita season, along with frosty brews in a koozie for when it was time to slow down on the cocktails (such smart thinking...NOT!) Now that I'm sober, I still want to enjoy delicious and refreshing beverages that have all those bursting summertime flavors without the rachet hangover.

When I think of the flavors that I crave during the summertime, I think watermelons, fresh strawberries, fresh citrus and juicy, ripe fruits in general. So being the food and beverage gal that I am, I like to find ways to take these flavors and create healthy options to enjoy, and in today's blog, we're going to do JUST that!

Friends, crank up the tunes, put on that swimsuit, and let's get ready to enjoy some mocktails that are BURSTING with flavor and that are super nourishing for your body from their wholesome, clean ingredients! The recipes are very similar in preparation and ingredients, but lend very different flavors.

WATERMELON SPRITZER:

This recipe is inspired from the classic summertime staple found in most homes during the warmer months, watermelon. From its hydrating properties to its antioxidant and electrolyte compounds, this is a natural must-have ingredient for the summertime months. We'll be juicing the watermelon for this recipe, and utilizing the leftover parts to ensure every part is used (I hate wasting food products, so I tend to use every last bit by creating spin-off products).

INGREDIENTS:

Watermelon (either whole, or pre-cut), cubed

Lime, cut in half

Mint leaves

Sparkling water

In either a food processor or juicer, take your cubed watermelon and blend/juice until it becomes liquid.

Note: if you use a food processor, you can reduce the blended watermelon down to straight liquid by pouring liquid through a cheesecloth and strainer.

Take a few mint leaves (about 6-8 leaves) and place in the bottom of a cocktail shaker.

Take one half of the lime and juice into cocktail shaker over mint and muddle together, for about 1 minute.

Add in ice cubes until 1/2 full. Fill shaker with watermelon juice, covering all the ice.

Cover shaker and shake hard for about one minute, ensuring the ice breaks down into ice shards and the mixture becomes a tad frothy.

Uncover and strain drink into your favorite glassware; top off with splash of sparkling water and more ice cubes if you'd like.

Tip: any leftover watermelon juice can be placed into the ice cube trays and used anytime you want to splash some summertime into your soda water, or used in your summertime smoothie recipe in place of regular ice cubes.

CUCUMBER MINT MULE:

Many healing techniques include looking at the body's constitutions. For instance, some people have excessive heat properties, that carry over to the illness(es) they may experience. Ironically, plants have the same constitutions , giving us heat properties, cooling properties, etc.

This mocktail recipe gives us all the summertime flavors, with the added bonus of foods that are naturally cooling as an added healing benefit.

INGREDIENTS:

2 cucumbers, peeled

Mint leaves

Lime, cut in half

Sparkling water

DIRECTIONS:

In either a juicer or food processor, add peeled cucumber and blend/juice.

Note: if you use a food processor, you can reduce the blended watermelon down to straight liquid by pouring liquid through a cheesecloth and strainer.

Cut lime in half and juice both sides into a cocktail shaker.

Take a few mint leaves (about 6-8 leaves) and place in the bottom of a cocktail shaker with the lime juice.

Muddle together, for about 1 minute.

Add in ice cubes until 1/2 full. Fill shaker with the cucumber juice, covering all the ice.

Cover shaker and shake hard for about one minute, ensuring the ice breaks down into ice shards and the mixture becomes a tad frothy.

Uncover and strain drink into your favorite glassware; top off with splash of sparkling water and more ice cubes if you'd like.

Tip: any leftover cucumber juice can added to some lemonade/ limeade to spruce up the flavor, or simply freeze in ice cube trays and add into your seltzer water when you want a lil' something different.

STRAWBERRY BASIL COOLER:

This flavor combo always has my mouth watering, even though it may seem like an unlikely combo. The sweet flavor of strawberries and the peppery flavor of basil make this an amazing beverage to cool off to on those sizzlin' summer nights!

INGREDIENTS:

Fresh strawberries, one full carton

Basil leaves

Lime, cut in half

Sparkling water

DIRECTIONS:

In either a juicer or food processor, add fresh strawberries and blend/juice.

Note: if you use a food processor, you can reduce the blended strawberries down to straight liquid by pouring liquid through a cheesecloth and strainer.

Cut lime in half and juice into cocktail shaker.

Take a few basil leaves (about 6-8 leaves) and place in the bottom of a cocktail shaker, adding it with the lime juice.

Muddle together, for about 1 minute.

Add in ice cubes until 1/2 full. Fill shaker with strawberry juice, covering all the ice.

Cover shaker and shake hard for about one minute, ensuring the ice breaks down into ice shards and the mixture becomes a tad frothy.

Uncover and strain drink into your favorite glassware; top off with splash of sparkling water and more ice cubes if you'd like.

Tip: any leftover strawberry juice can be added to your morning oj or added right into your smoothie of choice for a burst of summertime!

NOTE: for all above recipes, no added sweeteners are used. I prefer to have my drinks sweetened by the natural flavors of the fruit, but if its not sweet enough for you, you can always add whatever sweetener you'd like.

For some variations, try each recipe in different glassware or as a frozen, blended treat!
